Counselor, Assistant Counselor and Instructional Staff:

The counselor is responsible for the safety, happiness, fun, support, encouragement and well-being of campers while at camp. Nobody matters more in a camper’s life: a counselor is mom, dad, teacher, role model and best friend. Counselors are directly responsible to the camp directors and are expected to be alert and co-operative.

 

Duties include :

1) Ensuring Physical and Psychological Safety of all Campers

• Make sure the space is arranged and equipped for safety
• Ensure that a ‘plan B’ is prepared, in case of last-minute changes in weather or other conditions
• Be aware and concerned for the social adjustment of each camper
• Activities and places are introduced with explicit instructions
• Supervise and Assist in cabin group housekeeping duties and foster a respect for their surroundings.

2) Structuring the group

• Manage time efficiently
• Establish a way to gather, a signal to get attention of the group
• Control the group without being domineering
• Handle emergencies and interruptions
• Plan and carry out activities that will help the campers build new friendships
• Ensure that negative/destructive behaviour (whether physical, verbal, emotional) is dealt with immediately and appropriately

3) Creating Supportive Relationships

• Express enthusiasm for activities, and to take a leadership role in them
• Encourage campers to participate
• Show respect for peers and co-workers
• Make a sincere effort to constructively assist less experienced staff
• Respond to questions in a supportive manner
• Clearly lay out expectations
• Follow through with articulated expectations

4) Providing Opportunities for Skill Building:

• Instruct in morning lessons as requested by Camp Directors, and encourage each camper to participate actively
• Plan engaging activities
• Knowledge in activity area
• Present directions in a clear, concise, age-appropriate way
• Break down steps for easier learning
